I really did not understand the New Year hype. Yes one year has passed and perhaps it is the time for us to behave like Janus the two-headed god. to look behind and learn what should not have been done and look forward to see what we could possibly do ( or vice versa).
Definitely it gives many of us a chance to celebrate and ring in the new year. I am sure that many did. For some like me it was just another day and a tryst with sandman, for some it was an experience in the company of Bacchus and for a few others it was a close hugging experiences in the arms of Morpheus.
While I reveled in discovering that 2013=3x11x61 and also it is the year with distinct digits after 1987, thanks to a pass-time called Facebook, some of my friends went on a long drive on the marina, some exercised their hips at the discotheque, a large number I think spent their time on the television.
The mood was sombre in the wake of the shameful incidents and the cold wave sweeping the north. It is time to let sleeping dogs lie and the cat out of the bag to tell the truth. The new year began with a message from my friend. He had sent a quote from Confucius – “To put the world right in order, we must first put the nation in order; to put the nation in order, we must first put the family in order; to put the family in order, we must first cultivate our personal life; we must first set our hearts right.”
It is very true. Strangely in my mind I drew a parallel with the AMUL experience. Disparate milk sources ranging from half a litre to maybe ten litres coalesced to form the operation flood. It is the need for the hour for consciousness to grow. Be it a movement for safer streets for women or for the rising prices to come down.
If we all feel the petrol prices are high then it is us who should evaluate, walking, cycling and car pooling. I remember, quite a while ago, the price of the cha was raised by what we would now consider as nothing much. The regulars at the tea stall just stopped having cha. This continued for two days and the price was back to normal. But then it was a long time ago and in a local geography. Can it be done on a large scale? I suppose it can be.
January 1, 2013 was just another day…
